At the end of July, 1917, the 2/7th London of 174 Brigade, 58th Division, moved back from the front line at Arras for a period of training at Simencourt, where they remained for the next month until moving north to Ypres. John Cray was killed on 7th August, 1917, when the battalion diary simply recorded that Company training took place so there is no obvious explanation for his death. The most likely explanation is that he was attached, temporarily or otherwise, to another unit at the time. |
